le's all do the pie dance!

had a fun night of almost going to adree's to eat vegan gumbo soup...then almost going to the library..then making apple hemp muffins to take to adrees and then not going...then calling people and no one being home... and needing companionship, so turned out to be great because Mandy came over to raid my closet of my vintage-y dresses, and my pearls. oh my! what is a lady to do without her pearls?
i was a watchin planet earth so we watched it...PIKAS! and mandy wrote the most beautiful recipe for me! my chocolate truffle recipe! coated in cocoa butter, haha!
then adree knocked on my bedroom door and came in bearing soup! she dropped it off and went to dance, then i watched survivor and the office with mum and adree appeared again! we watched a little audrey toon, "tarts and flowers" my fave. and she drew me some pictures and i made her one of my butterfly hair sticks! and we talked about stuffed animal deer purses and going to brown co. on sunday to get our photo made (in tintype)
that being said, here is a picture of me with a hemp muffin. (with my butterfly hair stick!)

the pumpkin pictured, was bought at someones house today. i wanted 2 minis so tylea and i could sit in the living room tomorrow night and carve them with newspapers under them to catch the pumpkin goop.
dad and i are going to the artcraft tomorrow night also, to see "Dracula"!

b.b.q. tempeh sandwich!

i have been craving a faux meat, barbequed. so i had some tempeh in the drawer (which is only the second time i have used some...the first time adri and i made some faux bacon and watched sweeney todd)
so i barbequed it in the oven and ate it on wheat toast with ketchup, cumin, curry powder, garlic powder, and nutritional yeast.
YUM.
had 2. tasty tasty.
ate it while watching 'woman of the year' with miss katherine hepburn and the odd man coupled with her, spencer tracy.

brown county. beans & corny cornbread.

had a fun day in brown county! bought 3 different ribbons for my hair and a piece of homemade paper. tried on my future black derby hat...and got a skeleton key to make out of a necklace. a nice man overheard that i wanted one, but they didn't have any at an old antique store, and he gave me his off his key ring.
then we went krogering and now i am back at home. i hadn't eaten all day, so i made beans & cornbread when I got home!! my favorite food! now i am venturing to adrees, we may bake chocolate+peanut butter cupcakes.

orange bread is banana apple butter bread.

on this windy autumn day, i baked a loaf of banana-apple butter bread.
it is smelling up the house......mmmm.
I made up this recipe last night, with a bit of help from Deceptively Delicious' banana bread, I used it as a base.
I can't wait to taste it, banana bread is my favorite quick bread....
The bread was good, not overly sweet, and it was very moist. But I am going to change the recipe a bit and test it again, then I shall post it. It is full of pecans!
I also recieved the new Nov+Dec issue of VegNews! Muffin section!
Well I shall go cut a little piece of bread and have a taste and finish watching Cary Grant in 'To Catch a Thief'. last i saw he was in swim trunks and oh so tan.

Mandy's birthday!

the other night i baked up a pecan pie for mandys little birthday. she loves pecan! so i baked a 'fudge pecan pie' from la dolce vegan and took it over there last night. it was luscious and thick and so fudgey, get stuck in your teeth fudgey. she loved it! and she had a big pretty birthday cake! white cake with buttercream frosting. it was a fun night!
then I went over to adree's, she made dinner! we had Veganomicon's spaghetti with bean balls (like little faux meatballs made with kidney beans) it was delish-eeous. i got to eat out of my favorite john deere bowl. haaah.

Snottie reincarnate, as a woman

Kitty! I was doing the dishes tonight and noticed a kitty sculking around behind the pine trees, so i went out to greet her. i called her to me and noticed that she had a splotch next to her nose, just like Snottie!!!! It was meant to be! And then she came closer, and she had one eye.
i gave her a can of tuna and petted her and she warmed my lap and started to make bread.
it was a bit painful at times.
then i had to go in and fix my dinner (spaghetti & tofu) very yum.
i hope the kitty is mine and i hope she will live in the pine trees and rub against dads mower all the time. and i hope dad never discovers her.
i may name her Cleopatra, she loves to be the center of attention and have hands all over her. and she has one eye.

my plans for halloween......

Only 2 more weeks until Halloweeeeen. I discussed it a bit with TyLea last night, she has to work, but I was just thinking about it....last year Myke, Mom and I watched "The Shining". I am thinking this year, after TyLea gets off work, she could come here and we could all watch Hitchcock's "The Birds" and we could eat some pumpkin chocolate chip bars from martha stewart (which I really want to bake!!!)......I don't trick or treat anymore but I am really excited about halloween this year! I am going to goodwill tomorrow, so i may look for some clothes for a costume. Last year I was a hippy at Katie's party.
Here is the fine recipe from martha stewart for the punkin bars.....(veganized of course)

Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Squares.

Makes 24

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour (spooned and leveled)
  • 1 tablespoon pumpkin-pie spice
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1 1/4 cups sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup canned pumpkin puree
  • 1 package (12 ounces) semisweet chocolate chips

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line bottom and sides of a 9-by-13-inch baking pan with foil, leaving an overhang on all sides. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, pie spice, baking soda, and salt; set aside.
  2. With an electric mixer, cream butter and sugar on medium-high speed until smooth; beat in egg and vanilla until combined. Beat in pumpkin puree (mixture may appear curdled). Reduce speed to low, and mix in dry ingredients until just combined. Fold in chocolate chips.
  3. Spread batter evenly in prepared pan. Bake until edges begin to pull away from sides of pan and a toothpick inserted in center comes out with just a few moist crumbs attached, 35 to 40 minutes. Cool completely in pan.
  4. Lift cake from pan (using foil as an aid). Peel off foil, and use a serrated knife to cut into 24 squares.

loaf of the gods.

I just watched 'under the Tuscan sun' and my first loaf came out of the oven! It is a byoot. very rustic, the way i have always wanted a loaf of bread to turn out. browned on top, and when you strike it, it makes a hollow cooked-dough sound. i would like a slice with some e.b. please.
Here is the recipe for "Good Bread" from The cookbook for people who love animals.
Yields 2 loaves.
5 cups whole wheat flour, 1 cup cornmeal, 2 tbsp. active dry yeast, 2 tsp sea salt, 2 cups warm water, 5 tbsp. oil, 1/2 cup sorghum, sprinkle of cornmeal/bran
In large bowl, combine 2 cups of the flour, cornmeal, yeast and salt. Add the water, oil, and sorghum. Stir well for 3 mins. Add enough of the remaining flour to form a stiff dough (I added 2 more cups) Turn onto a floured surface and knead for 10 mins, until no longer sticky. Place in an oiled bowl; oil top of dough lightly, cover and let rise 1-1/2 hours in a warm place (always the laundry room)
Punch dough down (adree's favorite thing to do). Knead for 3 to 4 mins. Divide into 2 equal parts. Sprinkle bottom and sides of two loaf pans with cornmeal/bran to prevent sticking. Cover and allow to rise for 40 mins. Preheat oven to 350F. Bake the loaves 45-50 mins.

milk bucket mac

oh yes, more rotini with 'cheese gravy' (eaten for dinner last night. Recipe on 8.14.08 post-minus the tofu).....and watched 'bringing up baby' again!
today i got off at 10 am. so i am in the process of baking some bread...post later with results, picture and recipe! theresa let me borrow various movies, 'under the tuscan sun'.....'return to me' (remember daunie?)...one with penelope cruz and a matthew mcona-hey! movie (theresa loves him)
so i suppose i am going to lazy and watch a movie, it is chilly outside so that seems the appropriate thing to do, and bake some bread.

Bringing Up Baby

Mom recieved a yellow padded envelope in the mail....and later I realized it was mine! My movie (bringing up baby) had arrived already!!!!!! Wooooooooooooo
So I baked Theresa some brownies, I came into work yesterday and she asked if I had baked something, because she hadn't eaten breakfast. She said she wanted brownies, so I baked "wolffie's chocolatey moist brownies" from la dolce vegan and covered them with chocolate glaze. They weren't bad, but the texture of the brownies was like raw french toast, eggy.
anywho, i watched bringing up baby (one of my favorites) and ate a few brownies......

cold mountain chili

i woke up at 9 this morning, ate frosted corn flakes and went back to bed until noon. Got up and ran, painted my face warrior style with mud, and started to practice my archery, on the second test shot, i shot my arrow into the woods. and now tis lost forever, returning back to the earth.
so i showered and scrubbed the dried mud from my face, and was proper again and cooked a large kettle full of chili. the same chili from the other day, my chili. and baked some 'country corn muffins' from how it all vegan. not pretty muffins. and not too tasty. how it all vegan is famous for its ugly food recipes i do believe. ugly and not too tasty.
and i put in Cold Mountain and watched that all afternoon. and crocheted, and worked on my poetry zine and listened to a beethoven record.
now i am a bit peckish, and may go watch 'notting hill' which theresa let me borrow.
cheers and go make some chili!

noodles with cake

today i hope shall be baking/cooking day...I want to make "good bread" from the cookbook for people who love animals...and daunie's veggie chili soup stew....or my chili again. I went grocery shopping yesterday at b-foods and kroger.
when i got home i made vegan with a go-go's fettucini alfredo. it was pretty good, but too much black pepper! and not strong enough like alfredo sauce, I shall change it up a bit the next time i make it. and i have a lovely piece of b-fodder's carrot cake that daun made. it was really really good, but i still love my broad ripple carrot cake the mostest.
i have set out horsey apples for the deer, on the fake deer, and they still haven't come and got their snack!
here is a picture of my dinner last night.....

10.11.2008

"Please put out her grace's hair."

saw The duchess with adree last night.
we whipped up some peanut butter mousse before the show....
1 pkg. silken tofu, 1 tsp. vanilla, 1/3-1/2 c. pure maple syrup, 3 heaping, big large spoonfuls of peanut butter, 1-2 tbsp. silk very vanilla soymilk.
combine in a food processor and blend until ultra smooth. refrigerate.
at the movie we sat all the way at the back and drank sparkling juice from adrees plastic champagne cup. it was elegant indeed. and we wore dresses and big boots.

cary grant & chocolate chip cookies=love

After dinner last night (of leftover chili and a piece of precious bazbeaux pizza) i was seriously craving a cookie. i frantically flipped thru my vegan cookbooks, trying to find a cookie recipe that didn't involve maple syrup, or other ingredients i didn't have.
finally i looked on the computer, where i have tons of word documents with recipes pasted on them from various sites. I found vegan with a vengeance's chocolate chip cookies!
I had everything, and i had organic brown sugar, so i used that. They were oh so soft and delicous and melty.
Here is how I made a batch of 15 cookies...I halved the recipe and changed it a bit. And I watched "An Affair to Remember", with Cary Grant & Deborah Kerr. Theresa from work let me borrow it! Mmmmm Mr. Grant and soft, warm chocolate chip cookies, oh my land.

VWAV pillow-soft chocolate chip cookies.
1/2 cup earth balance marg, soft & at room temp. 1/2 c + 2 T organic brown sugar. 1 T molasses. 1 tsp. pure vanilla. 1-1/4 c. whole wheat white flour. 1/2 tsp soda. 1/2 tsp salt. 3/4 c semisweet chocolate chips (Ghiradelli brand). 2-3 T soymilk.
350f. cream softened e.b. with brown sugar until fluffy. add molasses and vanilla and mix in. add flour, soda, and salt and mix until a dough forms, if a dough does not form, add 2-3 T soymilk until a cookie dough forms. mix in chocolate chips and then dig your hands in. roll into 1 " balls and plop on ungreased cooky sheet. bake 8-10 mins. until slightly browned. let cool on pan a bit, then transfer to a rack if you would like. they will cool on the pan just fine. try one warm!

Yay! I made a recipe card of it on keyingredient.com!!!!

chili dolls!

ate leftover chili for dinner while listening to jeniffer and clarissa talk about welsh lamb pies and ladies who lunch. i took the oatmeal chocolate chip cookies to work today and everyone loved them. theresa ate a bunch of them, and i gave the recipe to her and mary.
here i shall post my chili recipe! adapted from 'sherri's black bean chili' in la dolce vegan.

ALLY'S CHILI.
1/2 white onion, chopped. 1 T olive oil. 1/2 green pepper, chopped. 1 c vegetable broth/stock. 1 c apple juice. 1/2 t cumin. 1/2 t salt. 1/4 t cayenne pepper. 1 can pinto beans, drained. 1 can black beans, drained. 1 handful TVP. 1/2 c tomato sauce. 1/4 c rice.

In large saucepan, saute onion in oil until translucent. add green pepper and saute additional 2-3 mins. add veg broth, juice, cumin, salt, and cayenne. bring to a boil. reduce heat and simmer 5 mins. stir in beans, tvp, tomato sauce, and rice. cover with lid and simmer 15-20 mins., or until rice is done. Stir occasionally to prevent rice from sticking. Serve with a garnish of cilantro, ma'am.

*art by dame darcy...."MEATCAKE"....a lovely, horrific comic.

chili & cookies

Tuesday was a social event indeed. it was raining so i stayed inside and papaw came over for a visit. he brought me about 6 huge Jerusalem tomatoes from their garden. He talked about some good eggs he ate and a homemade shower outside. Then I cooked up some chili, like I did the previous night. I used 'Sherri's black bean chili' recipe again, but I modified it because I didn't particulary love it the first time. Now it is crazy good! I call it Allys chili now. everyone has their own chili recipe, so this is mine! I shall reveal it at a later date. Then I baked some of my favorite cookies, 'maureens oatmeal choc. chip' to take to work....Myke came over and brought the computer so he ate some chili and a cookie. That is about it. I slept like a log, we have been very busy at work this week! Now my goal is to cook/bake something new everday. (if i have all the ingred.)
Tomorrow shall be: Pumpkin Butter. from bittersweet blog.

vegan a go-go....chili....& gene kelly

so hungy today. made chili when i came home from work (9-1/2 hours!) I made Sherri's black bean chili (like daunie did) except used pinto beans, and no green chilis...and used a green bell pepper. i liked it, but mine turned out very thick, like a dip. so i added more stock and water. it is addicting, i kept eating it out of the container once i put it in the fridge. next time i shall improve upon the recipe for my tastes (boca ground round...tomato sauce instead of paste....)
I also recieved "VEGAN a go-go" when mom came in..she retrieved it from the mailbox for me. i loves it so far. and of course they included "maureens oatmeal chocolate chip cookies"...seriously kids, the best cookie on the playground. must get back to gene kelly..singin in the rain.

talking dog bakery business.

mom and i ate at bazbeaux today! i got a "Genova" pizza...no cheese please. (eggplant. mushrooms. fresh basil. fresh tomato) and extra saucey. it was deli-ish. we got ingredients for vegan rice krispy treats at the good earth and i bought noodles some carob chips. and we went into three dog bakery and saw dog costumes! there was a knight, a ballerina, frankenstein, and many more. my favorite was a green caterpillar. they had a big knight outfit that would fit noodle. we bought him a bunch of cookies, some 'truffles' and 2 miniature crunchy bagels topped with melted carob and nuts. fancyness. and mom bought a little mat for noodle to eat him morning food off of. it is vintage looking and says BOW WOW brand dog food. now we are at home! i am making hummus later and some chili tomorrow night to eat on this week. (the chili from my sisters blog...sherris black bean chili...with pinto beans)
and i bought 2 boxes of corn flakes at kroger !! ever since i watched Flakes i have craved corn flakes!!!! i bought a juice sweetened brand...mmmmmmmm. my breakfast before thy apple job.

roasting on a spit

ren faire today! with daunie and chris. it was bizzarity. it was at the bottom of a huge hill in a valley. striped tent tops and tons of people. the queen was there and ate cheese cubes and cheetos. we drank homemade root beer and ate hummus and kettle corn. i watched the archery boys (drool) me loveth the archery.
we were there all day and got BURNT UP. after the faire we sat on the hill and drank apple cider from dirty apples. we ate at roscoes tacos and ventured home.

10.02.2008

Noodle's piece of cake.

Daunie inspired me to bake a cake for Noodles today...so I baked up a carob cake with a peanut butter filling, and a cream cheese-peanut butter-banana frost. The cake turned out great, very fluffy and light. I dog-ified the 'new carob cake' recipe from "The Cookbook for people who love animals". and i made up the frosting recipe. Noodle could barely contain himself when i sat it down, he didn't sit all nice and properly next to it, like iggy. but i did cut him a slice and he gobbled the whole slice in his mouth, i had to tear a large chunk off so he wouldn't choke on all that cake!!
